Project 52 - Week 10: Patterns

3/10/2017

For some reason, when this week's theme appeared, I immediately thought of that scene in "The Sound of Music" where Maria decides to use the very badly patterned drapes to make the Von Trapp kids play clothes. They say the mind works in mysterious ways, but after that initial response, nothing could find its way past draperies and old wall paper in my head.

My head is very clogged this week.  I have the flu.  The dreaded flu.  It's very true that "ideas" are somewhere up there in my brain, trapped like in the Hotel California...I can't get to them and they can't get out.  Someday when I can breathe, smell, taste and hear again, I hope they will come marching out the front door screaming "WE ARE FREE!"

Until then, I decided to use a wall paper-like patterned backdrop taped to the wall, the very orangey-spotty-patterned Lilah, and a ring of pink flowers to show that patterns can actually complement each other, even if they are different colors and different shapes.  There is a time and place for a patterned backdrop for sure, and 80% of the time I use a plain backdrop, but I do think it all worked out for this week.  What do you think?

Hint:  When patterns may collide, you want to keep them soft.  I used a 24-70mm lens with a very wide aperture to focus on Lilah's eyes, and soften the rest of the photo elements.

Now to see more patterns, take a jog around the blog circle, then let your ideas flow in your own photography work to include some patterns!  Start here with Cahlean Klenke of About A Dog Photography, serving St. Cloud & central Minnesota.  Oh, and have a great weekend!

You may have swayed me away from solid backdrops to at least consider bringing in a subtle pattern. Like you said, however, softness is key, and I think that's why this works so well for me. I love that there's less focus on the actual pattern, but rather that the wide aperture created that dreamy, pastel background. It really complements Lilah's coloring and her floral accessory!

"Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night."

One of my favorite songs ever and my favorite band!

I hope your head is better.

Nice job tying the flowers around Lilah's neck and the flowers on the wallpaper.

Hope you feel better soon! Nice job on the patterns. It definitely helps to keep patterned backdrops soft, because otherwise they tend to clash with your subject or draw too much attention away. I like how you can see the vague hint of flowers in the background, echoing the flower ring.

I love all of this image- including Lilah's wee facial expression. That soft background and flowers works really really well!
