Project 52 - Week 9: Doorways

3/3/2017

This week's theme was an interesting prospect.  There are so many great doorways in my area, and many historic buildings and homes.  I used to actually drive to historic districts with my camera, park my car, and walk around taking photos of doorways.  It's been a while, but this assignment certainly brought back those moments.

We have had some great weather, and I found myself walking some trails with Billie.  Various trail offshoots led to rentable, very rustic, cabins in the woods.  I like rustic, old wood, and primitive, so I decided to take a photo of Billie in the doorway of one of the cabins..

I must admit this was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and I did not have my camera with me.  Once again, the only thing with me was my cell phone.  As it happens, one of my goals is to take better photos with my cell.  It's not great for distance, but it does work for closer shots.  It's also not as strong on detail, but it does capture good color.

For my own purposes, and to preserve quick memories when I don't want to lug my camera on a trail hike, it works.  I always have my cell phone with me when I am hiking in case something happens and I might need to phone for help.

I think the shadows from the trees make this shot more interesting.  The sun was behind me and shining right on Billie.  I find it hard to see the photo you are taking clearly when the sun is shining on the face of the phone, but in the end I took about six photos and found two where I felt the light was right.

Here is one more, a little closer and at an angle.

I guess it proves that in a pinch, a cell can come in handy.  I am on board to go back to this spot with my camera and a wide angle lens to try it again.  As a post script, I found three ticks on me and two on Billie when we were done with our hike.  Ticks are not my favorite things.  Time to get out the repellent!  In February!  In Pennsylvania!  Who knew?

To see more doorway interpretations, hit the blog circle running, starting with St. Cloud & central Minnesota dog photographer Cahlean Klenke of About A Dog Photography, then look for the link at the end of each blog to take you to the next photographer.

We are now in a cold weather pattern and headed toward overnight lows in the single digits.  Crazy, right?  I hope you have a not-so-crazy weather weekend!

Nice job with your cell. That is a skill I do not have... cell phone pics are a struggle for me!

Thanks, Kim. I shied away from phone photos for a long time, but here and there I am seeing some value in knowing what works when using a cell phone for pics.

Wow, I'm again so impressed that these were taken on your cell! I would never have known if you didn't say.

We are battling ticks, too, near Pittsburgh. Just last night, we pulled two big fat ones off Hunter's chin and the top of his head. I hate those little buggers! On today's schedule for us as well: getting more tick repellent.

I have a feeling we are in for a very bad tick season. We use a natural product called Evolv which I can highly recommend.

Thanks Kelly. I agree that when it comes to being able to preserve a moment, a cell phone works sometimes.

Billie is a very special dog, and totally devoted to me. I must have done something right in life to deserve the devotion of this very fine girl.
